Dear friends, there is some great music around. It has
been years since I liked this much music that I am playing and years since I
have enjoyed myself doing so. Those who come over and get annoying by asking
for… old style music, old style clubs, old style vocal house (whatever that may
mean?!) make me feel sorry for them. They haven’t got much up top. With that
aside, never like now has there been a need for true sound systems. This is an
old argument and I know we have had it millions of times. It really is time for
a change though. I have personally decided to no longer go and play at those
clubs that have a sound system without the necessary characteristics for
bringing out the right result that the music being played calls for. I
recommend that you do the same. It is time that the club owners realised that
at the centre of night clubbing is the music, the sound and not all the other
crap that, normally, they spend tons of money on. The music is the centre and
the people dancing are the true spectacle. That’s all.
‘Til next time.
GOLDFRAPP
“Ride A White Horse” (MUTE)
Nice and ‘flexible’.
THEO
PARRISH “Falling Up (Carl Craig remix)” (THIRD EAR)
Him again! An authentic wonder.
SALIF KEITA “Yamore
(Luciano remix)” (white)
‘Oblique’ and very evocative.
LUTZENKIRCHEN
“Counterfunk” (GSR)
‘Oliver Koletzki’s Krimi remix’… criminal!
GUS
GUS “Need In Me” (PINEAPPLE)
Pure techno-soul. I even listen to this at home, when
I am doing my bits… and that says it all.
MARTIN
EYERER “Wicked Line” (KLING KLONG)
The ‘Original’.
LOGIC
SISTER “Wie Auch Immer” (RINGEL BEATZ)
Sinuous vibrations.
LOCODICE
“Carthago” (COCOON)
Geometric, hypnotic and… shaken up (just as Federico
Locchi pointed out to me, Lo Codice is a great ‘shaker’). Beautiful.
ELLEN
ALIEN “?” (NEUTON)
I like the version by Dinky.
THOMAS
SCHUMACHER “Kickschool 79” (SPIEL-ZEUG)
This creates ‘panic’ everywhere!!! A true ‘biggie’.
MATTHIAS
MEYER “Reichenbach” (LIEBE DETAIL)
One of my favourite pieces.
HEARTZ4
“Intimaci Girl” (HELLO ? REPEAT)
The bass makes itself at home in a corner of your
brain… and stays there.
DANIEL STEPANIK “The Bells” (MOBILEE)
I swear. This sends me crazy!
FAIRMONT
“Gazebo” (BORDER COMMUNITY)
It is almost as if this doesn’t need reviewing, it is
so fundamental! Fun-da-men-tal!!!
HARDFLOOR
“Soulful Spirit” (KILL BRIQUE)
Go straight for the version by Josh Wink. Pure class.
HUG
“The Happy Monster” (K2)
This is really strong when it starts up… the sound,
the people start hanging off of the ‘chandeliers’ as well as anything else they
can hang on to.
EUPHORHYTHM
“Patrik (Dr. Motte’s Testified 1997 remix)” (IMMER)
Exactly the same as above.
BERG
NIXON “Box Escape” (MINUS)
GAISER
“And Answer” (MINUS)
The sound of Minus (the sub-label of Plus 8) is either
interesting or one you ignore. There is no middle field. I find it rather
extreme however very important for creating possible new directions and new
addresses for dance music as well as music in general. If you like Minus you
should get these two records.
DOMINIK
EULBERG “Eine Oleine Schmetterlings” (TRAUM)
Fabulous.
CRISS
SOURCE “Gate Twenty-One” (MAURITIUS)
Simple and effective.
GOLDFISH
UND DER DULZ “Ding Dong Privacy” (KICK BOXER)
Two ‘things’ from Patrick Chardonnet that shouldn’t be
missed.
3rd
FACE “Yoga Bola” (white)
The version by the Pasta Boys greatly represents their
actual sound address and expresses exactly their great potential.
PARALLEL
SOUND “Party Goin’On” (WHOOP!)
‘Kitty Kitty dub’.
LAYO
& BUSHWACKA! “Feels Closer” (OLMETO)
On percussion there is Nino Cinelu who is a true
legend and this alone justifies you buying it… however, naturally there is much
more also.
HUNTEMANN
& WINTER “In Your Car” (CONFUSED)
Nice, effective and very sexy… veeeeery!!!
MAGNETIC
BASE “Mad Racket” (HIGHGRADE)
Without a doubt the ‘Samin’s Low Down mix’.
STEPHAN
BODZIN “Marathon Man” (SYSTEMATIC)
A nice ‘trip’.
LAYO
& BUSHWACKA! “Life 2 Live (remix)” (OLMETO)
One of my favourite songs. Usually it ‘comes up’ at
least two times in my set.
FUNK
D’VOID And PHIL KIERAN “White Lice” (SOMA)
Bloody Hell!!!... A bomb. Trust me.
ADAM
BEYER “A Walking Contradiction” (PLUS 8)
A vortex!
LEO
MAS + ZEN “Magic Acid” (OCEAN DARK)
True power. Consider it as an uppercut that, if
unleashed at the right time, will knock anybody out.
SLEEPER
THIEF “Freeride Freefall” (64)
When it starts up again after the ‘reverbs’ it makes
your head spin. A bomb.
TERRY
BROOKES And AARON SOUL “City Life” (CITY HOUR / RE-VOX)
Nowadays it is in the public domain, practically a
classic, how could I not mention it though. Carl Craig at his best.
FEDERICO
LOCCHI & FRANKIE WATCH “Ping Pong” (TENAX)
Beautiful, well constructed and very effective. When
the bass sequence comes in… you have to shout!
BRITNEY
SPEARS “Breathe On Me” (JIVE)
‘James Holden dub’… ge-ni-al.
